Gather boxes and other packing supplies. Mark the Mover carries a full line of packing supplies available for pickup or delivery. Estimate a fair value for the items you are moving. If moving is not covered by your homeowners or renters insurance policy, play it safe and request information about valuation coverage.

Mark the Mover, Inc. cannot carry chemicals on a moving truck. Dispose of flammables, cleaners, and poisons or arrange to move them in a personal vehicle. Drain all gas and oil from your mower and other motors. Gas grills, kerosene heaters, motorboat engines and go-karts, etc. need to be emptied as well.

Other items that cannot be transported by Mark the Mover; Sterno, Fireworks, Ammunition, Paints and paint thinner, household batteries, pool chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, Matches, Aerosols. Liquids that could be caustic or flammable. Any compressed gas products, such as fire extinguishers, aerosol hair spray, or compressed air for cleaning electronics.

The Post Office has an extensive list of items that cannot be shipped by post or parcel post. Almost all those things cannot be shipped by a common carrier mover either. Dispose of properly or give away to a neighbor unused items like charcoal lighter fluid or oven cleaner, and what you must keep, think about transporting yourself as you would your pets and valuable houseplants.

Two Months before your local move

Mark the Mover dispatch will call you the day before the move. Feel free to check ahead of time to be certain your move is scheduled. Well known companies will be very reliable. Online reviews can help you see which companies can be counted on for your relocation task. Make your adult children come get their stuff, or it is going to charity!

• Eat perishable items and frozen foods.

• Start a ‘RN’ – Relocation Notebook. Keep receipts for moving related expenses in your RN. Obtain an IRS Change of Address form, Form 8822, by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS at www.irs.gov website. You will be able to download and print form 8822 and most other IRS tax forms.
• Consider buying a locking box for medical records, important documents, jewelry, coin collections, etc. – to be relocated in your personal vehicle.
• Return all the things you have borrowed, return library books, videos.

One month before moving

• Post Office – Change of Address form. Get this at www.usps.com – Add this to your RN and make copies.
• Make a decision on who will do most of or all of the packing. It is a good idea that you let the mover do most of the packing. They know how to do this best.
• Contact utility providers (e.g. telephone, gas, electric, cable TV and trash collection) at new and old locations with your moving date to make arrangements for connection and disconnection.

Two weeks before moving

• Clean and clear closets, basement and attic.
• Dispose hazardous items not allowed to be shipped like Gasoline and propane tanks – corrosives and combustibles
• Drain your lawn mower, snow blower and power tools of all the oil and gasoline to ensure safe transportation.
• Schedule appliance disconnection and preparation with a service provider.
• Cancel newspapers and other regular deliveries
• Clean out gym and school lockers

One week before moving

• Pick up any dry cleaning and laundry.
• Disconnect and clean any appliances that will be moving with you and those that will remain. Use baking soda to get rid of any odors. Consider leaving a container of baking soda in the refrigerator.
• CHARGE YOUR PHONE.

Moving Day

• Greet the movers. Some paperwork might be required to begin the process. If you are not able to be present the entire time the movers are there, have a friend or family member to make decisions.
• Consolidate keys, alarm codes, garage door remote controls, etc. in the kitchen door closest to the garage. Notify the real estate agent.
• Take pictures if necessary. It is your responsibility to see all of your goods are loaded.
• Have a pet and person sitter kids, dogs, cats and grandparents during the loading and unloading process.

Moving Day

Make a plan for parking a moving truck as near as possible to an entryway. If parking on a street or lot is required, reserve the appropriate spaces with personal vehicles or road cones. Pick up dry cleaning.

• Introduce yourself to the neighbors. Find out which day the trash is collected.
• Find out the best dry cleaner.
• Find out what cable and internet providers they like.
• Ask around about the best and safest gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores.
• Register to vote at your new address.
• Review your Relocation Notebook, you will need it at tax time. Make sure you have all your relocation expenses.
